The annual Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) will take place in Jember, East Java, from July 31 to Aug. 4.

Themed “Tribal” Grandeur”, the upcoming event will involve over 6,000 participants, kompas.com reported.

The carnival's president, Dynand Fariz, said the event, with all its creativity, could attract foreign visitors.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya praised the carnival, saying it was the source of inspiration for similar parades that had taken place throughout the country.

He said the Jember Fashion Carnival was Asia’s best carnival and among the world’s top three carnivals.

“The JFC has been listed as one of the top ten [events] on the Calendar of Events for three consecutive years,” Arief said.

Arief said each event included in the Calendar of Events needed to meet five requirements in terms of creative value, commercial value, communication value, CEO commitment and consistency. This year's Jember event, he explained, was not only expected to have great content, such as music, choreographed performances and traditional outfits, but it also had to directly help local residents.

Jember Deputy Regent A. Muqit Arief also praised the carnival, but said it would be overwhelming to host tourists throughout the event.

He said that due to the large number of tourists that were expected to visit Jember, houses in the regency were turned into temporary homestays, and some tourists would stay in neighboring regencies.

“I thanked [Arief Yahya] who has helped make the JFC possible and supported Jember tourism,” he said. (jes/kes)
