“Our target visitors are domestic and foreign travelers who have been in the country since March,” the park management head Lukita Awang Nisyantara told kompas.com, adding that they had prepared protocols since June.

Local guide Muhamad Barto responded positively to the news as many of the regency's residents rely on tourism for their livelihoods.

The park reopened on July 6 for domestic tourists within the regency only and with a limitation of 25 visitors per day.

Travelers who wish to go to the park are required to register online prior to visiting by submitting their name, identity card or passport number, medical certificate and insurance company or BPJS Kesehatan (Health Care and Social Security Agency) information.

Additionally, travelers have to specify which tourist sites they would like to visit, such as Komodo National Park or sites on the mainland or in the sea outside the national park. The mainland sites include Batu Cermin, Cunca Wulang, Rangko Cave and Kelimutu National Park, while the marine tourism sites include Kanawa Island, Kelor Island and Menjerite.

The registration page also provides details on the health and safety protocols for travelers, such the possession of a negative COVID-19 test result, physical distancing measures, bringing their own snorkeling equipment and wearing masks.

Visitors to Komodo National Park are also required to go only with one of the travel operators listed on the website.

In February, the park denied entry to cruise ships until May 19 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. (wir/wng)
