ndonesia wants to invite representatives from the economically and ecologically vulnerable South Pacific to the Group of 20 Summit in Bali next year as part of its commitment to the Pacific and inclusive growth, its top diplomat said at a ministerial meeting with New Zealand.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi hosted her visiting counterpart Nanaia Mahuta in Jakarta on Monday as part of the Indonesia-New Zealand joint ministerial commission meeting, the two nations’ annual consultation forum.

The visit was part of Mahuta’s first overseas trip since her appointment last year. Indonesia was the third destination in her seven-nation trip after Australia and Singapore.

Indonesia has been working closely with New Zealand in promoting cooperation in the South Pacific, a foreign policy objective it has intensively developed over the past few years in a bid to counter criticisms from the region over the security situation in Papua and West Papua.

In late October, Indonesia organized the second Pacific Exposition, a business-matching event held virtually for private sector players from Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and other South Pacific nations.

With New Zealand’s support, the event drew almost 11,000 visitors and generated up to US$104 million worth of business transactions, Retno said.

The first Pacific Exposition was held in Auckland, New Zealand in 2019, inviting more than 120 businesses from Pacific island nations to market their top commodities and investment potential.
