T

he foreign ministers of Japan and Singapore agreed Saturday to seek an early conclusion of bilateral deal on defense equipment and technology transfer, as Tokyo aims to counter China's maritime assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan also agreed to coordinate on responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.

Japan has been in talks on a defense equipment pact with Singapore after their prime ministers agreed to launch the negotiation when they met in June in Singapore.

Japan has already signed similar deals with other countries, including those in Southeast Asia.

Tokyo has been accelerating efforts to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, the vision promoted by Japan and the United States in a veiled counter to China's growing economic and military influence in the region.

Hayashi also met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong earlier in the day, agreeing to promote cooperation between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the ministry said. Japan and the 10-member ASEAN will mark the 50th anniversary of their relations next year.

Hayashi is on his four-day trip through Monday and will meet with Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah on Sunday.
