Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi has renewed her call for the international community to step up its efforts and ensure accountability from international law violators, as the crisis in Gaza enters its third month.

Retno was speaking in Geneva during a somber 75th commemoration of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Tuesday against the backdrop of a recent deadlock in the UN Security Council that had once again prevented a cease-fire in Gaza much to the world’s dismay.

Retno also said that Jakarta would participate in the public hearing on the request for an advisory opinion on the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, slated for early next year.

An advisory opinion is the court's non-binding position on international legal cases and the request for it was made late last year by the UN General Assembly seeking clarity on the legal consequences of Israel's continued occupation of Palestinian territory.

“I am sure, deep in your heart, all of us acknowledge that a gross violation of human rights is happening in Gaza and in Palestine,” Retno said. “Various accountability mechanisms in Palestine must go beyond business as usual and we must ensure due follow-up of all these processes.”

Nearly 20,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip according to recent reports, following Tel Aviv’s indiscriminate reprise responding to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack launched against Israel.

Indonesia, a member of the UN Human Rights Council and a fervent supporter of Palestine’s independence, has for weeks been pushing for a temporary cease-fire and an investigation into Israel’s violations in Gaza.
