efense Minister and likely president-elect Prabowo Subianto has tasked Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotejo to deliver a thank-you letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who earlier congratulated him on his lead in the presidential poll.
Dito is scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart Oleg Matytsin later this week in Kazan, Russia for an event.
"I also intend to deliver a letter from Bapak Prabowo Subianto to President Vladimir Putin, following up on the congratulatory message he sent days before," Dito said in a statement published on Thursday.
Dito said that in the letter, Prabowo wrote to Putin that he wanted to further strengthen the ties between the two countries.
Two days after the Feb. 14 balloting, when the unofficial quick count results put Prabowo in the lead position, Putin sent the Gerindra Party chairman a congratulatory message.
"Dear Mr. Prabowo Subianto, please accept my sincere congratulations on the occasion of your convincing victory in the presidential election. Indonesian-Russian relations are based on beneficent traditions of friendship and mutual respect and are successfully developing in various areas," Putin’s congratulatory message reads.
Putin expressed confidence that Prabowo's activity as head of state would contribute to the further development of the entire range of Russian-Indonesian cooperation for the benefit of both countries' citizens, and in the interests of strengthening security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
