T

he Australian government has boosted bilateral education cooperation with Indonesia with the introduction of a new tertiary scholarship program on Aug. 28, in spite of the country’s ongoing efforts to curb the international student population amid rising political heat on immigration issues.

The new cooperation between Indonesia’s Education Endowment Fund (LPDP) and the Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) grants 50 recipients from Indonesia a spot at “world-class” universities in Australia next year.

The AAS has been running for over 70 years in Indonesia and has around 13,000 local alumni.

The LPDP said the 50 additional spots were agreed through a “special track” negotiation and were exclusive to Canberra’s national quota for international students.

The new LPDP-AAS program follows from last year’s meeting between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and targets exemplary students interested in pursuing certain fields, including the blue economy, green energy as well as digital and information technology.

“The [master’s] programs available [...] will align with Indonesia’s development objectives and priority areas of bilateral cooperation,” said a joint statement from the LPDP and AAS.
