The 44th and 45th ASEAN Summit, slated to run in Vientiane until Friday, will be the first time that President Joko "Jokowi" misses the bloc’s leaders meeting.
ice President Ma’ruf Amin flew to Laos on Tuesday to attend this year’s ASEAN Summit on behalf of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the first time that the outgoing president will skip the regional leaders’ meeting.
Ma’ruf departed for Vientiane from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta at around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. He was accompanied by Second Lady Wury Estu Handayani and several staffers.
The Vice President is scheduled to land at Wattay International Airport in Vientiane at 6:10 p.m. local time and to be greeted by Laos’ Forestry and Agriculture Minister Linkham Daunsawan, Indonesian Ambassador to Laos Grata Endah Werdaningtyas as well as other Laotian and Indonesian officials.
While attending the ASEAN Summit, Ma’ruf will deliver several speeches, including a message on the bloc’s achievements in the past 10 years and suggestions on strategic measures to be taken by the group in the future.
“The Vice President’s main messages are about ASEAN's achievements in the last 10 years and the continuity of the bloc’s efforts in implementing the 5PC in Myanmar,” vice presidential spokesperson Masduki Baidlowi said in a recorded statement on Tuesday.
Masduki referred to the Five Point Consensus, a plan to restore peace in Myanmar that puts an emphasis on immediate violence cessation, dialogue among all conflicted parties and the engagement of a special envoy on the crisis.
The spokesperson added that Ma’ruf would also push messages to partner countries to support ASEAN’s centrality, while urging the bloc to be more adaptive in responding to current global issues and support Palestine.
