resident Prabowo Subianto has witnessed the signing of a deal between Brazil’s aerospace giant Embraer and state-owned PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) to advance their collaboration in commercial aviation, saying that he was eager to “increase the capacity” of the national aircraft maker.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU), according to Embraer, will pave the way for future joint studies and partnership opportunities for engineering and aerostructure supply.

“I welcome the cooperation between Embraer and our local aerospace company Dirgantara as I seek to increase [its] capacity,” Prabowo said during the Indonesia-Brazil CEO Forum when the deal was inked on Sunday, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

“I will make new investments to produce smaller regional planes,” he added.

High on the shopping list were planes with a capacity of 17 to 35 passengers, the President said, and other planes with a maximum capacity of 100 people.

PTDI said that the MoU would provide a working structure that “follows tight commercial and technical standards” in order to “advance technological innovation and industrial partnership among developing countries”.

“We look forward to developing this collaboration and tapping into Embraer’s 55 years of expertise and knowledge, which will boost our capabilities, particularly in the commercial aviation sector,” said PTDI president director Gita Amperiawan in a statement.
