resident Prabowo Subianto left Jakarta on Tuesday to attend the Developing 8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D8) Summit in Cairo and hold bilateral meetings with several heads of state.
Other than Indonesia, the member states of the D8 are Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
The summit will be held from Tuesday to Thursday.
"I will hold a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Then I will attend the D8 Summit," Prabowo said before his departure at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
"Egypt is our close friend, a strategic partner for Indonesia and an important country in the Middle East.”
Prabowo will also meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after the summit.
Prabowo said the D8 Summit was an important event, especially as Indonesia would assume the organization’s chairmanship on Jan. 1, 2026.
Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said one of the summit's main objectives was to unite efforts to address the current global geopolitical situation, especially the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
"So first, the D8 is to align steps to face the global geopolitical situation today. Of course, this includes what is happening in the Middle East, in Gaza, because the spirit of developing countries is aligned to support Palestine," Airlangga said, as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that the summit would also focus on empowering micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in member countries, as all D8 nations were developing economies.
Airlangga said Indonesia's expertise in MSME empowerment, particularly in digitalization, could be shared with other member countries.
"Including digitalization, this is something we can share with other D8 countries," he said.
Airlangga noted that the D8 Summit would not primarily focus on large investments but rather on creating market opportunities for collaboration among member countries.
