The meeting between Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and his Japanese counterpart Nakatani Gen in Jakarta serves as a prelude to an upcoming meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Indonesia.
efense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin hosted a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart Nakatani Gen in Jakarta on Tuesday to discuss strengthening defense cooperation between both countries, including in the maritime areas of the Indo-Pacific.
The meeting served as a prelude for the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to Indonesia in the coming days.
Heightened security cooperation between Tokyo and Jakarta would be a strategic step toward improving peace, stability and prosperity in the region, Sjafrie said, amid an ongoing negotiation between the two on cooperation and the purchase of primary weaponry defense systems.
Arriving with his entourage in the early morning of Tuesday, Nakatani received a welcome ceremony at the Defense Ministry complex in Central Jakarta. He and Sjafrie then discussed the latest regional issues as well as building “trust and mutual understanding”, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Among issues talked by both ministers were regional geopolitical tensions; communication and personnel exchanges; maritime security; and multilateral cooperation. Both parties agreed to increase efforts and elevate existing cooperation, an outcome appreciated by the ministers.
“Such bilateral collaboration has large potential, especially in strengthening regional stability through military cooperation, capacity enhancement and increased interoperability,” Sjafrie said in the statement following his meeting with Nakatani.
