The Royal Malaysian Police arrested one Indonesian national in connection to the shooting, although it was unclear what role they played in the incident.
Malaysian authorities conveyed their commitment to thoroughly investigating a recent shooting by personnel of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) that resulted in the death of an Indonesian citizen, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said.
On Jan. 24, APMM personnel shot at a group of Indonesians who had attempted to leave the country illegally in the waters off Tanjung Rhu Beach in Selangor State. One Indonesian was killed during the shooting and four others were injured.
Indonesia is calling for a thorough investigation into the incident to determine whether excessive force was used by the APMM personnel. The call has been responded to by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), which agreed to open a “comprehensive, fast and transparent” investigation into the shooting, according to the ministry.
“As part of the ongoing investigations, the APMM officers who were involved in the patrol on the night of the incident have been relieved of their duties. The APMM has stated that it was willing to cooperate with the PDRM in the investigation process,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry went on to say that the PDRM delivered a statement to local media saying that it had arrested an Indonesian national in Malaysia as part of an ongoing investigation. But the ministry said that it had not yet received an official notice from the Malaysian government regarding the arrest.
