Indonesia ‘strongly rejects’ Trump’s Gaza takeover plan

United States President Donald Trump's plan for the US to take over Gaza and permanently displace the Palestinian population from the enclave will obstruct the realization of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, jeopardizing the two-state solution that is supported by the international community, the Foreign Ministry has said.

Indonesia “strongly rejects” any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians or to change the demography of the Palestinian territory, the Foreign Ministry has said, following Tuesday’s statement from United States President Donald Trump on his plan to take charge of the Gaza Strip and permanently relocate its population.

Such a plan “obstructs the realization of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine” as envisioned by the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the ministry wrote in a statement issued on Wednesday.

“Indonesia calls on the international community to ensure respect for international law, particularly the right to self-determination of the Palestinians as well as their inalienable right to return to their homeland,” the ministry continued, without any specific mention of Trump or the US.

The only viable path to lasting peace in the Middle East, it added, was through addressing the root cause of the problem: “the illegal and prolonged Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory”.

The ministry responded to a statement made by Trump during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US President unveiled a plan to take over the Gaza Strip, saying that he saw “a long-term plan ownership position” for the US that would bring “great stability to that part of the Middle East”.
