ndonesia has expressed condolences and its readiness to provide aid following a powerful earthquake on Friday that caused massive destruction in Myanmar and in neighboring Thailand.
President Prabowo Subianto conveyed that message to both nations through his account on social media platform X on Friday, followed by a similar statement from the Foreign Ministry.
“Indonesia stands ready to provide all necessary support for recovery efforts in the affected areas,” the President said.
While the epicenter of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake was in central Myanmar, its tremors were felt hundreds of kilometers away, including in Thailand. Due to its shallow depth at around 10 km, the quake caused extensive damage, destroying buildings and killing more than 1,000 people.
Located near the epicenter, Myanmar's second-largest city, Mandalay, suffered severe damage.
In Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok, located some 1,000 km from the epicenter, the earthquake also caused the collapse of buildings, Reuters reported.
In Myanmar, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to at least 1,002 people, with nearly 2,400 injured, AFP reported on Saturday, citing information from local authorities, while around 10 deaths have been confirmed in Bangkok.
