resident Prabowo Subianto on Sunday made a brief visit to Putrajaya to meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, discussing several ASEAN-related issues including the new United States trade tariffs.
The visit, also made as part of recent Idul Fitri celebrations, came amid intense efforts by several Southeast Asian nations to negotiate better trade terms with Washington.
“I have received the visit of my old-time friend and Indonesian President Prabowo this evening,” Anwar, who holds this year’s ASEAN chairmanship, said on Instagram.
“We discussed various key regional issues, including the impacts of the new tariff policy implemented by the US, on top of our collective efforts for the people in Myanmar that have suffered from the recent earthquake,” he said.
Ahead of the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a statement that Prabowo has “high respect for PM Anwar as a senior leader of ASEAN with long experience”, and as someone who “became a prime minister ahead of [Prabowo’s presidency] and is more senior in age”.
