View all search resultsA renewed bilateral agreement between Indonesia and North Korea aims to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.
oreign Minister Sugiono witnessed the renewal of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral consultations between Indonesia and North Korea on his visit to Pyongyang, the first ministerial level visit to the country in 12 years.
Sugiono arrived in Pyongyang on Friday, traveling on the invitation of his North Korean counterpart Choe Son-hui as part of the celebrations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
He was among the foreign visitors participating in the anniversary ceremony of North Korea’s ruling party, which was marked by a large military parade displaying its new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missiles. Other foreign dignitaries seen at the ceremony included Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev and Vietnam’s Communist Party chief To Lam, as reported by Reuters.
On Saturday, Sugiono held a bilateral meeting with Choe, during which both ministers exchanged views on the long-standing friendship between Indonesia and North Korea. They also discussed efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry on Saturday, Sugiono reaffirmed to Choe, Indonesia’s readiness to facilitate closer engagement between North Korea and ASEAN, including through greater participation in the bloc’s engagements, such as the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
Both ministers also participated in the signing of an MoU on bilateral consultations, which the Foreign Ministry called a platform to explore cooperation in various fields, including politics, sociocultural and sports.
