ndonesia has called on authorities in the United Arab Emirates and Oman to fully investigate last week’s explosion of the Mussafah 2 tugboat in the Strait of Hormuz involving five Indonesian nationals, as tensions escalate and attacks persist in the vital global shipping lane.
The UAE-flagged tugboat exploded and sank last week reportedly while attempting to assist stranded Malta-flagged container ship Safeen Prestige in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime corridor through which a large share of global shipment passes. The blast occurred amid heightened tensions and a series of attacks targeting commercial vessels in the area, raising renewed concerns over maritime safety.
A total of 15 crew members were reportedly on board of the tugboat at the time of the explosion, including four Indonesians. One of the Indonesian crew members received treatment for burns at a hospital in Khasab, Oman, while the other three remain missing.
Another Indonesian, a technician, reportedly was on the container ship at the time of the incident, and was now safely evacuated to Abu Dhabi.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said on Sunday that Jakarta was closely monitoring the situation while coordinating intensively with UAE, Oman and the ship’s operator to verify the condition of the crew and ensure assistance where needed.
“The ministry has also urged a thorough investigation into the incident, and Indonesian representatives are currently coordinating with authorities in the UAE and Oman, as they continue to investigate the cause of the incident,” Yvonne said.
