Israel has launched air attacks, sent ground troops into border areas and issued evacuation warnings that reportedly have displaced hundreds of thousands of people in Lebanon since it became a flashpoint in the wider conflict roiling the Middle East.
Israel’s latest strike late on Friday night hit a healthcare center in the southern town of Burj Qalaouiyah, killing 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses, as conflict between Tel Aviv and militant group Hezbollah rages on.
In a statement on X on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said the attacks in southern Lebanon “constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701” that was adopted in 2006 to push for permanent cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
“Indonesia calls on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, cease attacks that endanger civilians and civilian infrastructure and return to dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation and achieve peace,” the ministry said.
Lebanon was dragged into the Middle East war when Iran-backed Hezbollah attacked Israel in response to the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in United States-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28.
Israel has responded with air and ground assaults, killing at least 826 people, according to the Lebanese authorities, AFP reported. Tel Aviv has also issued evacuation orders covering hundreds of square kilometers of Lebanon, displacing hundreds of thousands of people.
