ecently, many Indonesians migrated en masse to 4G technology, owing to the various benefits that it offers, most notably the much faster internet connection that it provides compared to 3G. 4G technology can deliver connection speeds of up to 10 megabytes per second (Mbps) when your device is in motion, such as when you are driving a car or walking. When your device is in a still and stable position, the speed can be further increased to 100 Mbps.

Indonesian telco providers such as Telkomsel have also made 4G technology one of their staple offers, further accelerating its adoption.

Yet, a lot of technology skeptics, especially those living in big cities who take having a speedy internet connection for granted, might ask the following question: “Why should I migrate to 4G? What’s the use of a speedier internet connection anyway?” Yet, by migrating to 4G, you may realize that 4G technology can indeed improve your digital lifestyle in various aspects of your life, which will be discussed in more depth below.

1. Boosting your digital leisure experiences

Nowadays, instead of watching television or listening to the radio, people indulge in all sorts of audiovisual entertainment using digital platforms. Whether it is music streaming through Spotify, watching Netflix series, playing video games or simply watching cute cat videos on YouTube -- these activities rely heavily on internet connection.

Those still using a 2G or 3G connection are likely to experience long lag times or slow buffering, which may spoil their enjoyment of online content or activities. Well, 4G will allow you to enjoy content -- especially video -- uninterrupted, sans buffering. Try it for yourself and you will be able to tell the difference.

2. Assisting remote working and learning activities

Actually, long before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, remote working and learning had always been a way of life for some people. But now the pandemic has given the majority of people no choice but also to work and learn that way throughout the past year. Hence, a lot of people who previously had not needed a speedy internet connection, are only now discovering how frustrating it can be when their video conferences for work and study are impeded by a slow connection. Furthermore, learning and working require intense concentration, so when these activities are interrupted by a slow connection, it can be highly frustrating.

Thankfully, when the pandemic hit the globe, 4G had already been widely adopted by people around the world, including Telkomsel users in Indonesia. What would have happened if the pandemic struck when we were still using 2G and 3G connections. For those who have yet to adopt 4G, maybe all the glitches that you experience during your video conferences will be gone at the click of your fingers the instant you migrate to 4G.

3. Boosting your productivity

The more rapid connection offered by the 4G service can also boost people’s productivity. This is essential especially for content creators, who need to download and upload raw material including their final output in their entire creative process. Similar to the remote working and studying issue we have addressed above, content creators also have to concentrate intensely in their creative process. Content creators are also often required to work with lots of large documents and carry out research online. A slow connection will tax creative people’s mental energy, oftentimes draining them of their creativity.

Thus, a 4G connection will help content creators be more productive with their time. At the same time, 4G will also allow them to produce more superb content as the unimpeded internet connection will allow them to enjoy a seamless freewheeling with their creative flows.

In this regard, 4G can also help boost Indonesia’s economy by boosting the creativity and productivity of the country’s creative workers, including YouTubers, Instagrammers and game developers. Game developers are especially essential to Indonesia’s currently thriving e-sports and gaming industry. This is why a lot of telco providers in Indonesia, including Telkomsel, believe that expanding their 4G coverage is an essential part of their public service because the coverage expansion also boosts national productivity as a whole.

4. Helping people access the products and services they need

To return to the subject of the pandemic again, the crisis has made people, who are homebound most of the time, more dependent on online platforms to access the products and services they need. The online platforms catering to people’s needs cover a wide range of services, from commerce and consumption (e-marketplaces), finance (e-banking), learning and education (e-learning) and healthcare needs (telemedicine).

Thanks to its lower latency, 4G technology can help individuals conduct their activities in the sectors mentioned above much faster. For instance, people can complete their financial transactions, especially for urgent matters, faster online through 4G. It can also help them get prompt access to the health care they need.

If you are impressed by the story above on how 4G technology can make your life -- and the life of others around you -- much better, well, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other benefits of 4G that you will only appreciate after adopting it. Thus, if you are yet to migrate to 4G, you can simply exchange your SIM card for a new one at your nearest GraPARI outlet.

Alternatively, you can also submit a card change request via the telkomsel.com/4g-lte link, or the MyTelkomsel application, the 188 call center and social media. Do not worry: Telkomsel will take care of the process. You only need to sit and relax at home, knowing that you will have your SIM card delivered.
