LG lends hygiene services for Cianjur earthquake survivors

T LG Electronics Indonesia (LG) has organized a free laundry service for victims of the recent Cianjur earthquake. Under the company’s LG Loves & Cares corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, the South Korea-based company set up a tent with washing machines where affected residents could drop off their laundry and have it washed by LG staff.

LG was offering the hygiene-focused services for 10 days starting from Dec. 5. However, the services may extend from the original plan depending on the on-site situation. “We are open to extending and expanding the program as we continue to observe the victims’ condition in the refugee tents,” said Changdae Son, LG customer service president.

To set up the free laundry service, LG brought six washing machines with a capacity of 14 kilograms. The tent hoped to serve more than 100 people every day, without limiting the amount of laundry each person brought to the washing station.

“Living in tents makes hygiene and sanitation difficult to maintain for the earthquake survivors. Therefore, we hope that this [laundry station] will help alleviate their burdens, especially in hygiene maintenance,” said Lee Taejin, LG Electronics Indonesia president, mentioning that cleanliness must remain the top priority even with the lack of resources and other needs demanding their attention.

The laundry service was also conducted with strict health protocols to minimize crowds. For example, people were only allowed to come to the tent when handing and registering their laundry. “After the laundry is done, staff help deliver it to the owners’ tents or the [owners] could choose to pick it up at the LG laundry tent,” said Jay Jang, marketing and relations director of LG electronics Indonesia.

“With health protocols in place, we hope to prevent bigger health-related complications,” he added.

Furthermore, LG is also providing additional support in the form of a television and a freezer that can be used to preserve food ingredients for the shelter residents.

LG is also organizing free repairs by professional technicians for LG devices owned by locals. The program has a wider range, targeting surrounding communities around the Cianjur area that are not directly affected by the disaster. For this program, the company provides half price discounts for services that require the parts to be replaced. Meanwhile, repairs that do not will be completely free of charge.
