n recognition of the sea’s crucial role in the well-being of society and the future of the planet, PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) launched an environmental and social responsibility (ESR) program titled "BerSEAnergi for the Sea" on Oct. 11.
"BerSEAnergi for the Sea" is an integrated ESR initiative by PIS aimed at supporting the sustainability of the sea and enhancing the well-being of coastal communities.
The program encompasses various activities, including an educational literacy initiative titled “LiteraSEA” for school-age children, the empowerment of coastal communities and the improvement of their health, coastal clean-ups, as well as the conservation of marine life and ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs and whale sharks.
The launch of "BerSEAnergi" took place at elementary school SDS Mutiara II, North Jakarta on Oct. 11. PIS corporate secretary Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus, SDS Mutiara II headmaster Tumi, environmental activists and public figure Dimas Anggara, as well as local government officials jointly expressed their support for the program. That support was symbolized by the granting of marine-literacy assistance through the establishment of a library room, the provision of books and extracurricular activities to familiarize students with the sea.
Aryomekka stressed that the importance of marine literacy is due to two primary factors. First, the generally low literacy index of the Indonesian population. Second, the significance of nurturing a love for the sea, given that 70 percent of Indonesia's territory comprises the sea.
"As a company with operations predominantly at sea, PIS is committed to preserving marine ecosystems, including through marine education. The sustainability of the sea will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the well-being of the public," Aryomekka said.
Dimas expressed his support for the program and encouraged the students at the school to understand the importance of marine knowledge.
"I invite the students at this school to understand the importance of knowledge about the sea, considering that public awareness of the sea, especially marine litter in Indonesia, is still very low. Therefore, the hope is that school-age children can begin to care about the marine environment with the 'BerSEAnergi for the Sea' program, much like I was introduced to the world of the sea by my parents from a young age," Dimas said.
In this activity, young PIS employees also participated as volunteers in teaching classes through interactions and interactive discussions with students about the marine ecosystem.
PIS not only gave assistance to SDS Mutiara II, but also to three other schools as part of this program, namely state elementary school SD Petojo Utara 01 in Central Jakarta, state elementary school SD Wilulang in Cilegon, and elementary school SDS Miftahul Falah in Garut. The aid included marine-literacy books, mentoring activities through extracurricular teaching on marine matters, marine workshops and comprehensive support from libraries.
