SME partners see revenues surge 53% at Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2023

T

he Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2023 has concluded successfully. Among its notable outcomes is a remarkable increase in revenue for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) under the wing of the state-owned oil and gas giant.

These so-called fostered SMEs recorded a combined revenue totaling Rp 689.6 million (US$44,000) over three days of offering their products and services to spectators of the international racing event. This marked a substantial 53 percent increase compared to the revenue they earned at the event’s inaugural in 2022, which totaled Rp 452 million.

As it did in 2022, Pertamina invited 50 SME partners to participate in exhibition booths at the MotoGP event in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Of that number, 42 partners offered Indonesian food and beverage products, while the remaining eight SMEs offered a range of crafts including woven products, bamboo crafts, pearls, T-shirts bearing Lombok designs and Sasambo batik, which is unique to West Nusa Tenggara.

Pertamina president director Nicke Widyawati visited several SME booths located along the route of the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, stating that the company encouraged its SME partners to expand their presence and enter the global market.

"I have observed that these SMEs were already open for business from Friday,” she noted, referring to day one of the Pertamina Grand Prix on Oct. 13.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring the SMEs, which were curated [for this event]. They not only helped to meet the visitors' needs, but also contributed to the local economy. We have learned from previous events that many audience members need readily available food and beverages,” she said, adding that several partners also offered “unique Lombok crafts”.

Nicke expressed her hope that Pertamina's involvement would stimulate further business and income growth for its SME partners in Lombok, including expanding the range of products they offered.

"Of course, we hope Pertamina can continue to drive SMEs [development] in Lombok, so that Lombok gains more global recognition. These SMEs’ products will become even more diverse in upcoming events, which will stimulate their [Lombok’s] economy," she added.

Pertamina vice president of corporate communication Fadjar Djoko Santoso said the company was committed to empowering SMEs in Lombok during the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia. The event had not only helped boost the income of SMEs, but also benefited other local entrepreneurs and the wider Lombok economy.

"The participation of Pertamina's SME partners, both nationally and in general, can increase their incomes. Furthermore, it can improve the local and national economies,” said Fadjar.

“It also serves as a promotional platform for the region, especially Lombok, to showcase what makes Indonesia unique and thereby allow international tourists to experience things that are unique to Lombok. We hope this [SME partnership] will have a more significant multiplier effect for the nation, in that tourists will seek out the products they enjoyed during this event when they return to Lombok," he added.

Kusman Jayadi, the owner of an SME partnered with Pertamina, expressed his joy at being able to participate in the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2023. Besides making connections, he also saw an increase in his income.

"My product is Seagana Batik Sasambo. Its presence at the Pertamina MotoGP event attracted many guests from both Indonesia and overseas. Many of them have placed orders for [our] merchandise, and we are delighted that this [event] has served as a platform to promote our products, allowing us to gain more international recognition," he said.
