The government plans to hike electricity prices for consumers in the 3,500-volt-ampere category and above, in line with an earlier decision to reduce pressure on the state budget amid surging commodity prices.
he government will hike electricity prices for large houses starting next month, following a decision to reduce pressure on the state budget amid surging commodity prices.
Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry electricity director general Rida Mulyana said on Monday that households with power supplies in the in the 3,500-volt-ampere (VA) category and above would be subject to the hike.
That way, he claimed, the hike would only affect high-income families. Lower-income households typically opt for 450 VA or 900 VA power supplies.
“According to plan, it would be on July 1, but we still need to communicate this to the higher-ups,” Rida told reporters after a meeting with House Commission VII overseeing energy, industry and research.

The government says the move will alleviate the burden on the state budget, as it would reduce electricity subsidy spending.
Rida added that the ministry had approved the proposal and that all that was left to do was to inform the higher levels of government.
