eople have different ways to show affection to their significant others or other loved ones. However, all that fear seems to subside for one day of the year: Valentine’s Day. The annual event, dubbed the most romantic day of the year, specializes in love languages of all kinds. As with other special holidays in Indonesia, people turn to e-commerce platforms to find the perfect presents for their loved ones.

"Sales of flowers, chocolates, wrapping paper, perfume and parcels have each increased by three times," said Head of External Communications Tokopedia, Ekhel Chandra Wijaya.

Approaching the day of love, the platform saw an uptick in some categories, including fashion, household goods, food and beverages, electronics and body care.

However, some people are not as skilled when it comes to choosing gifts. For those in need of some friendly advice, clinical psychologist Irma Gustiana S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist., CPC is ready to lend a hand. Joining forces with Tokopedia, the psychologist is sharing five tips for identifying someone’s love language and how to choose the right one for loved ones.

"There are five kinds of love language, namely receiving and giving gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch and acts of service," explained Irma.

The first is the method that is most probably adopted by most people, which is giving or receiving unique Valentine’s gifts. When it comes to showing affection, the price tag does not matter as much as the meaning behind each item. Irma suggests a frame filled with dried flowers with a personalized greeting to make it more memorable.

For Tokopedia users, look no further than Lunette Flower and Gift. Founded in 2021 by Chrisfella Cokro Handoyo and Clarissa, the company revealed that frame products filled with dried flowers are very popular, especially ahead of Valentine's Day 2023. Chrisfella revealed that their orders had multiplied by three compared to the previous month.

As far as the note goes, Irma cannot tell customers all the secrets, as they will have to come up with it themselves. Although sometimes, a simple note that shows gratitude is enough to move someone. Ever so special, expressing love with words is the second love language to consider.

"Affection can be conveyed with simple words, for example, thanking them for the efforts that have been made by your loved ones or yourself so far," explained Irma.

"This form of appreciation can be expressed through unique greeting cards or gratitude journals which can be obtained through the Tokopedia Serba Seribu campaign," added Ekhel.

The campaign lets customers purchase an item by paying only Rp 1,000 (US$0.07). As mentioned before, price tags don’t really matter on this very special day of love.

The third may involve some food. As the old saying goes, “The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.”

Tokopedia offers many items, from frames to local ice cream. Maybe what a loved one needs is some quality time, for example by watching a movie while eating ice cream. Ekhel noted that the sales of the dessert had also tripled ahead of Valentine’s Day.

The next show of affection may not have been possible for the past few years, but as we heal together from the pandemic, this particular love language is bound to return: physical touch.

“Hugging, holding hands or sitting close together can trigger happy hormones such as serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine, which can make your mood calmer. Using skincare can also be an example of the love language practice of physical touch for oneself," said Irma.

Beauty and care products can be found at Tokopedia Beauty and Zona Ganteng.

The fifth can be connected back to the third, which is by ordering an act of service. For most people, that entails ordering their favorite food. Ekhel suggested that Tokopedia NYAM! could serve a customer best. The platform offers various kinds of food and drink from businesses, including local MSMEs from all over Indonesia

“Affection for loved ones and for oneself can be shown through simple but meaningful actions or services. For example, order your favorite food and drink when you're tired," concluded Irma.
