The President has called a cabinet meeting to discuss the country's e-commerce sector in general, including TikTok's planned expansion into social commerce.
resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Monday convened a cabinet meeting to discuss issues related to e-commerce in the country, with a decision expected over TikTok's plan to expand into social commerce.
Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Communications and Information Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said that the Chinese technology company’s social commerce plan was among the main items on the agenda.
"It will discuss trade and electronic systems and yes, TikTok Shop as well," Budi said, referring to the video hosting platform's live shopping feature.
Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan meanwhile said the meeting would focus on e-commerce in general.
"Yes, everything on digital trade," he said, as quoted by Antara.
The President has expressed concern about the growing reach and impacts of TikTok Shop, saying it had adversely affected micro, small and medium enterprises in the country.
Jokowi has called on TikTok to stick to social media and refrain from venturing into social commerce.
