he nation’s vibrant capital city is decorated with artistic work that has been passed down through generations, since before Indonesia’s independence, in the form of architecture, statues and monuments. The local culture embedded in the spaces they inhabit is a vital part of what makes the city special.
Art has the ability to evoke emotions and/or transport people to a different time. Therefore, the works of local artists should be encouraged and fostered. Astra, one of the biggest Indonesian companies that moves in several sectors, has long known the importance of helping young people grow their talents.
The company’s latest endeavor toward this end comes in the form of installations masterminded by Balinese artist Yessi “Yessiow” Nur Mulianawati. The collaboration is also a concrete reminder of Astra’s determination to support Indonesia's creative industry.
Having studied illustration since 2013, Yessiow has work that has been displayed internationally, in Spain, Greece, Austria, Italy and Australia. Together, the company and the artist are working to transform the Astra HI Traffic Circle Transjakarta Bus Stop. A number of areas around the Transjakarta station are filled with illustrations that tell stories about Astra for Today and the Future of Indonesia. Bringing her own touch to the murals, Yessiow uses cheerful colors that give enthusiasm and a positive feeling to onlookers as they pass by.
Under the theme “Find Your New Passion”, Yessiow is able to tell a story that highlights encouraging elements in the form of illustrations of Astra's sustainable spirit. These works make the face of the bus stop even more attractive with the Welcome Statue in the background, truly able to capture the spirit of Jakarta.
"This collaboration is a form of support for the works produced by Indonesia's young generation, through inspirational messages in the form of illustrative art images which are expected to make people find new enthusiasm in creating work to contribute to the nation and state," said Riza Deliansyah, chief of corporate affairs of Astra.
To liven up the inauguration of the new face of the bus stop, Astra organized a mini concert for commuters on Saturday, providing an atmosphere of beautiful melodies to evoke relaxation in what is usually one of the busiest stations in the capital. The event was followed by yoga activities the next morning.
For the next month, visitors can feel the spirit of Astra through the collaborative art installations. There is also an Astra Spirit Box which contains postcards with words of encouragement, as well as a telephone booth where people can share their daily complaints, so that their stories have the opportunity to be made into a topic of discussion in a podcast.
Astra's enthusiasm in supporting Indonesia's creative industry and spreading enthusiasm to the people of Jakarta for today and Indonesia's future, is in line with Astra's ideals of Prospering with the Nation and supporting Indonesia's Sustainable Development Goals.
