The operator of the new Greater Jakarta LRT has been forced to cancel many trips and slash travel speeds due to a lack of trains in working order.
T Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the operator of the Greater Jakarta LRT, has been forced to cancel as many as 103 trips a day on the new service due to a lack of trains in working order.
LRT spokesperson Kuswardojo said 28 scheduled trips a day had been canceled since trains were taken out of service on Oct. 18, and by Wednesday, that amount had increased by 75 as more trains were taken out of service temporarily for maintenance.
“With nine trains operating daily, a total of 131 trips a day are available,” Kuswardojo was quoted as saying on Wednesday by Bisnis.com.
Normally, the LRT network would have 16 trains in operation to provide the 234 scheduled trips every day.
Kuswardojo said the declining condition of wheels on some trains made the reduced frequency in trips unavoidable.
He went on to say that five trains were undergoing work at maintenance facilities this week, while two were experiencing signaling system defects.
“This reduction [in trips] has to happen, because the wheels of the operating trains have worn out and have to undergo lathing,” he said.
