This decision marks the formal beginning of the country’s journey toward joining the OECD.
he Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) council has opened accession discussions with Indonesia following the country’s application to join the bloc.
This decision marks the formal beginning of Indonesia’s journey toward joining the OECD, a group of 38 countries that discuss and develop economic and social policies.
Following a thorough assessment based on the OECD's “Framework for the Consideration of Prospective Members,” the council deemed Indonesia ready to embark on this rigorous accession process, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.
“Through the accession discussions the OECD will provide support to Indonesia as it continues on its ambitious reform journey towards achieving its vision of becoming an advanced economy by 2045,” OECD secretary general Mathias Cormann said.
Cormann highlighted the mutual benefit the move would provide, saying the process will also help to further strengthen the organization’s global relevance and impact.
Indonesia has shown an interest in becoming part of the OECD since 2022, in hopes that joining the bloc could help accelerate its transformation into a developed country.
