The flagship carrier gets a taste of Swiftonomics with a boost from concertgoers flying to Singapore. Most of the passengers came from Jakarta and Bali.
Garuda Indonesia recorded a 30 percent increase in passenger volume as a result of singer Taylor Swift's concerts in Singapore.
"It increased by 30 percent [for the concert period]. We added an additional flight," Garuda Indonesia president director Irfan Setiaputra said on Thursday.
The United States pop star is scheduled to perform on six dates in Singapore, on March 2-4 and March 7-9.
Irfan said many Indonesians attended Swift's concerts in Singapore, which resulted in high demand for flights to Singapore. According to Irfan, most of the passengers come from Jakarta and Bali. The number of passengers flying from Surabaya to Singapore also increased during the tour period.
Irfan explained that the changing trends in lifestyle played a role in this increase. The younger generation was, he said, willing to spend a lot of money on experiences and improving their social media presence.
He acknowledged that international events were often a boon for Garuda Indonesia. Apart from music concerts, he also said that sporting events were a positive catalyst for the national airline.
"During sporting events and concerts [passenger numbers] certainly increase. Singapore is great, hotel prices have also increased, right?" he said.
