T

he government is considering the establishment of a dedicated ministry to deal with the housing backlog and financing for developers.

Deputy State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Kartika “Tiko” Wirjoatmodjo said on Monday that he had heard of the idea to create a standalone ministry for the issue of housing.

“I’ve heard that maybe there will be a splitting in the future, that there will be a housing ministry,” Tiko was quoted as saying by Kompas.com.

“So, the focus will shift to the housing agenda again. We can be closer to the government to build a development concept that’s more regulated,” he added.

Under the status quo, housing is the remit of the Public Works and Housing Ministry, which arguably focuses most of its attention on public infrastructure, especially on projects categorized as National Strategic Projects (PSNs) under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration.

Tiko said a standalone housing ministry was needed to take care of the housing backlog of 12.7 million homes, the term used to define the gap between demand and supply.
