Airlangga meets Medvedev, agrees to strengthen bilateral ties

n June 11, the second day of his working visit, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto attended a special meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia and Chairman of the United Russia party, who also served as Russia’s president (2008-2012) and prime minister (2012-2020).

Welcoming Airlangga to the meeting, which was hosted at his official residence on the outskirts of Moscow, Medvedev emphasized the importance of Indonesia’s role and position to Russia, saying: "Indonesia is Russia's main partner and the largest in the Asia-Pacific region."

Medvedev also expressed his pleasure over this occasion, hoping to discuss mutual collaboration in various sectors as well as global issues to ensure a secure world.

"We are pleased to develop this component in our contact. Let us discuss cooperation to address global issues, issues that ensure the security of the planet. This meeting is a very good opportunity to establish contact for the development of multifaceted relations between our countries," he said.

Meanwhile, Airlangga reciprocated by thanking Medvedev for his very warm reception and highlighting Indonesia’s close cooperation with Russia.

"Russia is one of Indonesia's largest economic partners. We want to continue our cooperation and we hope to develop it further to achieve greater mutual understanding," he said.

This year marks the 74th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia relations and is seen as a very important occasion to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, especially in trade, industry and investment.

"Indonesia welcomes this meeting as part of [our] efforts to improve relations between Indonesia and Russia for the future," Airlangga said.

The coordinating minister also communicated Indonesia’s views on global and strategic issues including geopolitics, and noted the positive dynamics in the relationship between Indonesia and Russia.

Airlangga was accompanied at the special meeting with Medvedev by Indonesian Ambassador to Moscow Jose Tavares and an expert team from his office, while Medvedev was accompanied by several senior government officials.
