The Public Works and Housing Ministry infrastructure development at Nusantara will have to be suspended ahead of Aug. 17.
nfrastructure development at Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital city under construction in East Kalimantan, will need to be halted temporarily in the run-up to Indonesia’s Independence Day on Aug. 17, the Public Works and Housing Ministry has announced.
Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, who heads the Nusantara infrastructure construction task force at the ministry, said there would be no activities, including construction work, starting what he estimated to be a week before the Independence Day ceremony, news agency Antara reported.
However, despite the weeklong suspension, construction workers would not be sent home and the housing ministry would assign them to other activities, including certification training.
Moreover, administrative staff and others working in offices are set to continue working as usual to ensure development will smoothly continue after the ceremony.

"Some will remain there, and we will make use of them. For those working indoors, such as in offices, it’s fine. For those who have to be outside, we will arrange separate activities like sports or certification training, to keep them occupied. It's only for a few days," Danis said.
The ceremony for the 79th anniversary of Indonesian Independence will be held in two locations this year, in Nusantara as well as in Jakarta.
