The government will also push for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and light rail transit (LRT) on the island.
he incoming administration led by president-elect Prabowo Subianto is poised to push more infrastructure development in Bali, including a toll road connecting the northern and southern parts of the island, Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said on Thursday.
To date, Bali’s development has only focused on the southern region, which is known to be visited by many foreign tourists because of its proximity to the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, the principal gateway to Bali.
“In terms of infrastructure, I am quite sure that we can make Bali much better in the future. The President-elect has plans to connect North Bali to South Bali,” Luhut said in a keynote speech during the 2024 International Quality Tourism Conference broadcast online on Thursday, as Detik.com reported.
Luhut said that a feasibility study for the toll road project is already underway.
This was on top of a feasibility study on a Bali underground light rail transit (LRT) project, which would connect the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport to several tourist destinations in the southern Bali area grappling with ever-worsening traffic congestion.
“We also asked the World Bank to conduct a study on the underground LRT, from the Bali airport, Ngurah Rai to Sanur, and also to the Cemanggi area,” Luhut said.
