T

he Public Housing and Settlements Ministry is seeking World Bank support to help realize President Prabowo Subianto’s ambitious goal of building three million new homes annually.

Public Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar Sirait admitted that the state budget is insufficient to reach the target on its own, citing the ministry’s allotment would only be enough to cover less than 10 percent of the goal.

“If we rely solely on the state budget, we can only build 257,000 homes,” Maruarar said on Sunday, as quoted by Tempo.

“Purely technical approaches won’t suffice. Based on our budget, we can't even reach 300,000 homes. We must integrate strategy and execution to achieve this target,” he added.

The newly restructured ministry would begin working with a Rp 5.2 trillion (US$324.6 million) budget next year, despite its goal to build 1 million urban houses and 2 million rural houses per year.

Maruarar had earlier pushed for a major budget increase, proposing an additional Rp 48.8 trillion to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, which would have raised the ministry's total budget to Rp 53.6 trillion. However, the proposal was rejected.
