An in-house workers union has issued a scathing statement demanding the scandal-ridden company to call off the mass layoff planned for next month, maintain its operations and review potential business lines, as well as publish a clarification on an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud.
nionized workers from Bandung-based aquaculture technology start-up PT Multidaya Teknologi Nusantara (eFishery) staged a demonstration on Thursday in the West Java city to protest the company’s plan to lay off employees and shutter its business operations.
The workers, grouped under the in-house labor union SPMTN, have accused eFishery of resorting to drastic measures to mitigate fallout from recent turmoil due to allegations of fraud, including revenue overstatement.
“It is suspected this step is being taken in order to avoid paying the holiday bonus [THR] for Idul Fitri,” the union said in a statement, adding that the mass layoff was slated to take effect in February.
SPMTN emphasized that a shutdown would adversely affect fish cultivation and breeding as well as consumers in eFishery’s ecosystem.
It also said many fish farmers had been facing difficulties in obtaining fish feed and market access that eFishery previously provided, and that some were also struggling with mounting debt due to interrupted cash flow.
The group also raised concern over the “bad and biased news” spread by an eFishery shareholder who had alleged systematic fraud at the company.
