ertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), the upstream unit of state-owned oil and gas giant Pertamina, is mulling over a plan to operate an oil and gas block in Suriname, a country located on the northern coast of South America.
PHE exploration director Muharram Jaya Panguriseng said the firm had recently received an offer to operate the site.
However, before it could accept the offer, PHE “needs to consider several things”, he explained.
“We are waiting for the government’s policy. I am sure the government is considering the geopolitical aspects [of operating the block],” Muharram said in Bali on Tuesday, as reported by Bisnis.
Suriname has proven crude oil reserves of up to 89 million barrels. The country’s oil and gas industry is mainly operated by state-owned company Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname.
Muharram said PHE was concerned about the possibility of geopolitical tensions in the region affecting the oil and gas transportation to Indonesia.
Pertamina has been exploring opportunities for cooperation in upstream oil and gas development in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, with a focus on Suriname, Guyana and Brazil, all of which possess potentially substantial oil and gas reserves.
