The artificial intelligence-ready data center project, dubbed SMX01, is set to operate in Jakarta’s central business district (CBD) with an initial 18-megawatt (MW) load capacity that can be increased up to 60 MW.
Sinar Mas, through its digital infrastructure and services company SM+, announced the project in September last year by working together with Korea Investment Real Asset Management (KIRA).
“This new flagship data center reflects our commitment to deliver secure and scalable digital infrastructure that connects Indonesia’s thriving market with the global digital ecosystem,” President Director & CEO of SM+ Herson Suindah said on Thursday during the project's groundbreaking event.
He explained that the data center would focus on internet exchanges mostly in Jakarta, emphasizing that the strategic location was crucial to its target markets, such as banks and other financial institutions.
The project will also involve a joint venture between LG and Sinar Mas that will act as the technology advisor and operator because of its experience in operating and developing over 600 MW of total data center capacity in South Korea.
“By integrating our global technological expertise with SM+'s local market insights, we're setting new benchmarks for data centers in the region,” LG Sinar Mas CEO Han Dong Hyup said at the same event.
