T

he Indonesia Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) secretariat has insisted that the complete withdrawal of the United States from the program will have limited effect on the overall climate funding for the country, stressing that some ongoing deals will still commence as planned.

Paul Butarbutar, who heads the Indonesia JETP secretariat, said some US$1 billion in guarantees and a $1 billion in investments from the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) would still be accessible for energy transition projects in the country.

This includes DFC’s $126 million investment in the Ijen geothermal project in East Java, operated by PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal, a subsidiary of Indonesian oil and gas company Medco Energi.

“Soon, DFC and Medco will sign a loan agreement [for the project],” he told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

For now, there are no plans from the US to withdraw the money already allocated to the country, he said, but Paul did not deny that Washington’s move might add uncertainty to international climate support for Indonesia.

“We don’t know whether there will be subsequent measures from President [Donald] Trump’s administration,” Paul said.
