he Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas) has said that French energy giant TotalEnergies is considering reinvesting in Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry.
TotalEnergies is exploring the acquisition of a stake in the offshore Bobara oil and gas exploration block located in waters off of West Papua. Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) currently operates the block.
Asnidar, head of oil and gas prospecting and work area data management at SKK Migas, said the potential acquisition was still in the early stages and was being pursued on a business-to-business (B2B) scheme between TotalEnergies and Petronas.
“Yes, the process is ongoing internally between Petronas and Total on a B2B level. Let’s wait for the good news,” Asnidar said on Monday, as reported by Bisnis, referring to the apparent interest of foreign majors in Indonesia’s upstream segment.
She added that the specific percentage of Petronas’s participating interest had not yet been disclosed.
TotalEnergies’ potential return signals renewed global interest in Indonesia's upstream sector, with other major players like United States-based Chevron reportedly showing similar interest in the industry.
Asnidar confirmed Chevron’s interest in several potential areas but said discussions were still in the preliminary phase.
