resident Prabowo Subianto inaugurated on Thursday 50 renewable power plants and broke ground on five more across 15 provinces, backed by a total investment of around Rp 25 trillion (US$1.5 billion). Together, the projects are set to deliver 379.7 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
The main launch ceremony took place at the Ijen geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Bondowoso, East Java, along with additional ceremonies held simultaneously in other provinces.
“We launch these plants as proof that Indonesia is moving toward self-sufficiency,” said Prabowo, who joined virtually from Jakarta instead of in person due to unfavorable weather.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia revealed the bulk of the investment was in geothermal development, including Rp 23.49 trillion in eight major projects with an installed capacity of 351.9 MW.
Three geothermal power plants, the Ijen and Sorik Marapi plants in North Sumatra and the Salak Binary plant in West Java, have entered commercial operation. Construction on the remaining five PLTPs – Salak Unit 7, Wayang Windu Unit 3 and Patuha Unit 2 in West Java, the Ulubelu plant in Lampung and Muara Laboh Unit 2 in West Sumatra – is scheduled to begin this year.
