T Gag Nikel, a subsidiary of state-owned mining firm PT Aneka Tambang (Antam), has resumed operations in the Raja Ampat archipelago, Southwest Papua, after a temporary halt due to concerns over environmental damage.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s minerals and coal director general, Tri Winarno, confirmed on Monday that the company’s operations had resumed on Sept. 3.

He added that an evaluation of the firm showed positive results and that it had obtained a “green” rating from the government’s Environmental Performance Rating Program (PROPER).

The PROPER assessment on Gag Nikel involved multiple ministries, including the Environment Ministry, the Forestry Ministry, the energy ministry and the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry.

“In the PROPER [program], there are black, red, blue, green and gold [ratings]. Green means that [the company] has fully complied with environmental management standards and [carried out] community empowerment [initiatives],” Tri explained, as quoted by Kontan.

The energy ministry had suspended the operations of Gag Nikel over alleged environmental damage from its mining activities in close proximity to key tourist destinations.
