Organized by Koalisi Bali Emisi Nol Bersih (Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition) and the Bali provincial government, the inaugural Pekan Iklim Bali took the theme of “Titik Temu Ambisi dan Aksi Iklim” (“Meeting Point for Climate Ambition and Action”), taking place from August 25 to 30 in various locations across Bali, including Denpasar, Sanur, Badung, Klungkung, Karangasem and Gianyar.

Speakers who attended Pekan Iklim Bali 2025 representing the central and regional governments, include member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) Ni Luh Djelantik; Deputy for Food, Natural Resources and Environment of the National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas) Leonardo A.A. Koster stated that the Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka vision, an environmental protection pledge, serves as the main foundation for development aligned with Bali's local wisdom, which holistically protects nature, culture and society. Therefore, he continued, Pekan Iklim Bali 2025 aligns with the Bali provincial government's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045, which has been translated into several regulations.

"Through Pekan Iklim Bali 2025, climate commitment and action at the regional level, initiated by communities and regional leaders in Bali, will inspire more ambitious climate action in Indonesia," he said.

Pekan Iklim Bali 2025 focused on four main topics: regional leadership and governance; climate-based solutions or low-emission initiatives; grassroots approaches and sustainable entrepreneurship; and the green economy and sustainable green financing.

The series of events kicked off on Aug. 25 with the National Forum at the Prime Plaza Hotel in Denpasar, a two-way discussion for regional and national leaders, involving provincial, district and city administrations from Bali and other regions, representatives of the central government, along with development partners and community groups.

Panelists at the forum included West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah; ViriyaENB executive director Suzanty Sitorus; and Nirarta Samadhi, a member of the Koalisi Bali Emisi Nol Bersih committee and country director of the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Jelajah Inovasi (Exploring Innovations) activity on Aug. 26 to 27 included visits to various climate innovation sites and activities undertaken by community groups, including climate entrepreneurs, traditional villages, non-governmental organizations, and local communities.

The two-day event involved 18 partners and 13 locations around Denpasar, Sanur, Badung, Klungkung, Karangasem and Gianyar, with activities such as exploring permaculture and sustainable water management with IDEP Foundation, the launch of the Bali Clean Energy Village and Bali Youth for Clean Energy initiatives with WRI Indonesia and HSBC Indonesia, and a visit to the VOLTRADA Mechanix electric vehicle (EV) conversion workshop in collaboration with VOLTO Mechanix and Bali Land Transportation Polytechnic.

Convening climate finance institutions and climate solution providers, the Climate Investment Forum held at the Prime Plaza Hotel, Denpasar on Aug. 28 featured panel discussions and breakout sessions, spotlighting the challenges and opportunities in promoting sustainable climate finance.

During the event, the Bali provincial government launched the Bali Climate Financing Platform (BCFP), a platform for formulating strategies for preparing and financing climate-based projects in Bali designed to connect the government, project actors, financial institutions and investors in a more targeted financing ecosystem.

Financial institutions supporting the BCFP include the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH), PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMA), HSBC Indonesia, Maybank Indonesia and JETP Indonesia.

Pekan Iklim Bali 2025 concluded on Aug. 30 with the Pasar Rakyat festival at Segara Ayu Beach in Sanur, which invited the general public to learn about various climate- and technology-based solution initiatives, local Balinese MSMEs implementing sustainable practices, and climate-themed entertainment including a performance by musician and environmental activist Gede Robi (Robi Navicula).

Spotlighting strong regional leadership

The success of Pekan Iklim Bali (Bali Climate Week) has highlighted the crucial role of strong regional leadership in strengthening climate action commitments to achieve national and global emission reduction targets.

In line with Bali's climate commitments and actions, West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi stated that West Sumatra has made strengthening forestry governance, including social forestry, a top priority, combined with resilient and climate-resilient low-carbon development policies.

"Regional leaders have a key role in implementing regional climate action, as they directly experience the impacts of the climate crisis and must engage directly with local issues and contexts. Pekan Iklim Bali will be a first step and a catalyst for regional climate leaders to share insights and support each other to achieve regional climate ambitions that support national emission reduction targets," he said.

Environment Minister Hanif praised Pekan Iklim Bali 2025 as a demonstration of progressive regional leadership in supporting the national climate agenda.

"The Environment Ministry is ready to support local policies, community innovation, and public engagement. Regions can become the driving force for accelerating the path to a climate-resilient future," he added.

Current climate action and solutions require funding schemes that are sustainable, inclusive, and support local needs. To that end, ViriyaENB’s Suzanty emphasized that regional leaders need to integrate climate action with economic growth by adopting a regenerative economy that is locally based, independent, inclusive and sustainable.

"Regional leaders are encouraged to develop solutions that not only reduce emissions, but also restore ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of local communities," she said.

"Through Bali Climate Week, climate action solutions based on research and best practices can be scaled up and implemented effectively at the provincial and district/city levels," concluded WRI Indonesia’s Nirarta.
