etail sales and consumer confidence increased in November as Indonesians geared up for the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s festivities.

According to preliminary data from Bank Indonesia (BI) published on Wednesday, the retail sales index (RSI) was projected to have climbed to 222.1 in November, marking a solid 5.9 percent year-on-year (yoy) increase from 209.7 in November 2024.

In a statement released alongside the data, BI spokesperson Ramdan Denny Prakoso said the growth was mainly pushed by “increasing demands ahead of the preparation” for Christmas and the New Year.

The annual growth was primarily driven by sales of household appliances, cultural and recreational goods, as well as spare parts and accessories. Food, beverages and tobacco also contributed to November’s respectable growth.

Robust growth was also recorded in October when the retail sales index rested at 219.7, rising by 3.7 percent from the same period last year and a similar positive performance was likewise seen in month-to-month (mtm) terms for the past two months.

Sales of information and communication technology (ICT) products remained within negative territory in November, plunging by 33 percent yoy. The goods have continued to weigh on overall growth, consistently recording double-digit contractions since March.
