s Indonesia grapples with surging electricity demand from industrial downstreaming, manufacturing and data centers, the country faces a delicate balancing act: ensuring reliable power supply to sustain economic growth while staying on track toward its net-zero emissions target by 2060.
Akihiro Ondo, CEO of Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific, spoke to The Jakarta Post’s Maudey Khalisha about Indonesia’s power-sector readiness to meet electricity demand compared with regional peers. He also shared about structural challenges in scaling up renewables, the role of gas and hydrogen-ready technologies in the transition and how public-private collaboration can help close the country’s energy gap.
Questions: How do you see Indonesia's power sector readiness compared to the other ASEAN markets right now?
Answer: Currently, we see significantly growing electricity demand in global markets, including ASEAN countries. A major driver for such growth is AI data center demand or fuel conversion from conventional heavy oil or coal to gas.
On the other hand, Indonesia has huge potential and is in a very good position, with abundant resources, both renewables, like geothermal or hydro, which can be used for base-load power generation, and fuels including gas, minerals and coal.
So, Indonesia has a good chance to balance energy security and sustainability. One key element is the utilization of existing power generation facilities, including coal.
How should Indonesia structure its power-generation mix to balance energy security, affordability and decarbonization?
