Agincourt's Martabe gold mine to restart after post-disaster crackdown

The gold miner is targeting output of 60,000 oz this year if its Martabe mine in Batang Toru, South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, one of the worst-affected regions in the 2025 Sumatra disaster, resumes operations as scheduled in mid-May.

ocal heavy machinery firm United Tractors has stated that its mining subsidiary Agincourt Resources will resume operations at the Martabe gold mine in mid-May after halting production earlier this year due to a regulatory crackdown.

The decision comes after the Environment Ministry issued in March its long-awaited approval for restarting the mine under tighter oversight.

The original suspension was part of a broader government crackdown on mines with outstanding environmental compliance issues following the deadly Sumatra disaster in late November, when flash floods and landslides swept across three northern provinces including North Sumatra, where the Martabe mine is located in Batang Toru district.

United Tractors president director Iwan Hadiantoro said the company welcomed the ministry’s decision and was now working to meet all remaining requirements.

“To reopen the mine, there are many aspects that we must prepare. We hope that while preparing this and [awaiting] the paperwork’s issuance, perhaps by mid-May we can resume operations,” Iwan told a press conference on Thursday in Jakarta.
