nternational flights to Belitung Island resumed this week after a multi-year hiatus, as budget carrier Scoot launched a twice-weekly service from Singapore, in a move the government says will support tourism growth and foreign exchange earnings.
The route, which began operations on Sunday, connects Singapore’s Changi Airport with Belitung and runs every Wednesday and Sunday. The inaugural flight, operated using an Embraer E190-E2 aircraft with a capacity of 112 seats, recorded more than 70 percent occupancy, with 80 arriving passengers.
The restored direct connection marks a renewed push to position Belitung as an international tourism destination, supported by the Tanjung Kelayang Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which has been designated as a priority tourism area.
Within the SEZ, Tanjung Kelayang Reserve, a 350-hectare tourism estate on the island’s northern coast, is being developed with a focus on conservation and low-impact tourism.
More than half of the area comprises protected forests, coral reefs and coastal formations within the Belitung UNESCO Global Geopark.
The reserve is part of efforts to promote more sustainable tourism, including conservation and community involvement through partnerships with local stakeholders.
