The renowned film festival is looking to expand its collaboration with Indonesia’s indie filmmakers.

The Asia edition of the annual Sundance Film Festival will be held in person for the first time on Aug. 26-28 at FLIX Cinema in Ashta shopping mall in District 8 of the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD), South Jakarta.

The international festival for independent films, held by the Sundance Institute and Jakarta’s XRM Media with support from IDN Media Company, is screening eight feature films curated by the Sundance team: blood by United States director Bradley Rust Gray, Brian And Charles by British director Jim Archer, Fire Of Love by US director Sara Dosa, Leonor Will Never Die from Philippine director Martika Ramirez Escobar, Maika from Vietnamese director Ham Tran, Midwives from Myanmarese director Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing and RIOTSVILLE from US director Sierra Pettengill.

The highlight of this year’s festival are the works of the seven Indonesian finalists from Sundance’s Asia Short Film Competition, selected from more than 100 entries: The Archipelago by Azalia Muchransyah and Firman Wijasmara, A Trip to Bangka by Winnie Benjamin, Aya by Aditya Ahmad, Evacuation of Mama Emola by Anggun Priambodo, Ride to Nowhere by Khozy Rizal, Science Around Us by ARIV and Shallots and Garlic by Andrea Nirmala Widjajanto.

Sundance Institute CEO Joana Vicente said the festival aimed to collaborate more with the country’s indie film scene.

“We are thrilled to present the first in-person edition of Sundance Film Festival: Asia in Jakarta. The program represents the independent spirit of the Sundance Film Festival, and we can’t wait for local audiences to experience the humor, emotion, and beauty of these films,” she added.

Meanwhile, William Utomo, the COO of IDN Media, added: “We are very enthusiastic about presenting the Sundance Film Festival: Asia offline and presenting the best films for film enthusiasts in Indonesia. Hopefully, this platform will be able to support the film industry in the future.”
