group of Indonesian designers are set to showcase their latest collections at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) Spring Summer 2024 in the United States this week.
The designers hope to steal the spotlight in the prestigious event that draws the international attention of celebrities, fashion designers and the press.
Prominent Indonesian designers Didiet Maulana, Ghea Panggabean, Ivan Gunawan, Kimberly Tandra, Liliana Tanoesoedibjo, Marina Christyanti Ayumi and Merdi Sihombing will represent Indonesia on Wednesday’s runways.
“For me, it is an achievement,” Merdi Sihombing said on Aug. 30 during a press conference in the Semaja Restaurant in Jakarta. “It is not easy to present a collection at New York Fashion Week.”
The opportunity for these designers to reach the NYFW runways came from Indonesia Now, a community of Indonesian fashion designers founded by entrepreneur Dina Fatimah to promote the country’s fashion on the global stage.
Eco-friendly fashion
To take part in NYFW, Indonesian designers had to send in their portfolios to Indonesia Now, which then endorsed them to IMG, the official organizer and operator of NYFW.
