he annual international jazz festival organized by students of the University of Indonesia Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI), Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC), returns this year to celebrate its 46th anniversary. Titled “LPS Presents the 46th Jazz Goes to Campus”, the event will be held at the FEB UI campus, with this year’s festival focusing on providing a platform for young artists to showcase their jazz skills and on recognizing key stakeholders in Indonesia’s jazz scene.

With that in mind, the 46th JGTC is themed “Harmonizing the Jazz Legacy” to reflect FEB UI’s commitment to upholding the festival’s long-lasting legacy on jazz in Indonesia for the past 45 years.

This year’s iteration of the festival is supported by the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) as its main sponsor. In the LPS’ eyes, JGTC is not just a music festival, but also a historical music event, being one of the longest-running music celebrations in Indonesia, consistently delivering quality jazz performances. In light of this, LPS hopes that its support of this year’s JGTC can be a concrete step in developing Indonesia’s local jazz community, while also presenting its service to the wider audience to better enhance the public understanding of its role and function in Indonesia.

LPS Presents The 46th Jazz Goes to Campus also held a pre-event series that included the Roadshow Special Show UI, Workshop & Community Night and Mendadak Jazz Vol. 1.

Most recently, the JGTC organizers held Mendadak Jazz Vol. 2 on Sept. 30 as the final show of the pre-event series, which consisted of a press conference and Sarinah Jazz Night at Sarinah Department Store in Central Jakarta.

The press conference was themed "Bringing Together the Perspective of Music Industry and the Emerging Festivals Trend in Indonesia", and discussed topics such as accelerating the jazz ecosystem in Indonesia, music industry development and economic growth, and the contribution of Federasi Serikat Musisi Indonesia (FESMI; Federation of Indonesian Musicians’ Unions) to musicians and its view on music festivals in Indonesia.

To discuss these points, the press conference invited several key speakers to share their opinions and perspectives, including Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, chairman of LPS board of commissioners Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, JGTC cofounder and FESMI representative Candra Darusman, Reality Club front man Faiz Novascotia, who is part of the 46th JGTC Festival lineup, Forum Jazz Indonesia vice chairman Bagas Pramono and JGTC organizing committee chairman Bryan Farrel.

Bryan told the press conference that the LPS Presents the 46th Jazz Goes to Campus was a fully independent musical festival, completely run by active FEB UI students from its conceptualization to execution. He also said the festival’s main purpose of is to democratize jazz music, a musical genre typically associated with a high entry barrier, to make it easily accessible for all Indonesians to enjoy.

Minister Sandiaga also commented that music festivals contributed significantly to the country’s economic growth.

“Every single event has an economic effect. In 2023, the majority of events held were music festivals, and most of them were enlivened by local artists. Therefore, the government needs to support the smooth execution of music festivals like JGTC. As a concrete step, are currently working to simplify permits and security for music festivals in Indonesia, so [holding] events can be more secure and efficient," he said.

This year’s JGTC will be held on Nov. 12 at the FEB UI campus, with four mega stages featuring both international and local performers, many of whom are newcomers to the JGTC lineup, to provide a grander experience to festivalgoers.

Showcasing acts like Sheila Majid & Tohpati, Charlie Burg, Ahmad Dhani Electric Band, Maliq & D’Essentials, Tulus, Yura Yunita and a wide variety of quality Indonesian musicians, the festival lineup highlights the immense talent and diversity of the jazz scene in Indonesia and beyond.

Festivalgoers will also be treated to new and exclusive collaborative performances at JGTC, including the Nita Aartsen International Combo featuring Tompi, Nesia Ardi, Alexander Kuba and Borderline, Farrel Hilal and The Godluck featuring Rahmania Astrini and Jordy Waelauruw, and Barry Likumahuwa and The Rhythm Service featuring Candra Darusman, presenting a fresh, live experience for audiences.
