T

he Bakti Barito Foundation has been honored by the National Development Planning (Bappenas) Ministry for its sustainability principles and standards that have resulted in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets in the organization's business model.

The coveted distinction of the 2023 Indonesian SDG Action Award in the philanthropy category was presented by Minister Suharso Monoarfa at the SDG Annual Conference event in Yogyakarta.

Bappenas recognized the Bakti Pangan Lestari program by the Bakti Barito Foundation for its educational approach to helping smallholder farmers and their families build climate resilience and food security, which earned it the third spot this year.

The foundation has launched a series of skills-based, intensive training courses and provided assistance to strengthen food security, in order to improve the livelihood of farmers through education. It is hoped that the skills will be valuable to assist the next generation of farmers build climate resilience and food security.

“The younger generation are the future of our food systems, but they don’t have equal access to education and resources they need to build resilience against climate change,” said Dian A. Purbasari, director of the Bakti Barito Foundation. “As our population continues to grow, amid limited land and limited access to fresh water, we need to ensure that young people are climate-ready. With the right knowledge and support, our next generation can build regional food systems that are more sustainable, healthier and build a prosperous future for communities across the country.”

To build long-term initiatives, the program has also created an integrated agricultural business curriculum, Usaha Pertanian Terpadu (UPT), to equip teachers and students with the knowledge and skills they need to adapt to climate change and tackle future challenges.

Future obstacles include limited land and fresh water due to the growing population, and the growing need to utilize integrated farming or permaculture. The new curriculum has been approved by the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry.

The initiative is in line with realizing the second SGD, which aims to achieve zero hunger. Bakti Pangan Lestari is a collaborative effort between the Bakti Barito Foundation and its partners, The Learning Farm, Joglo Tani, Bandung Institute of Technology School of Life Sciences and Technology and the Consortium of Businesses of the Republic of Indonesia Concerned with Vocational Education.
